Against Predictive Optimization
On the Legitimacy of Decision-Making Algorithms that Optimize Predictive Accuracy. The flaws include biased and discriminatory outcomes, opaqueness and lack of transparency, lack of accountability, reinforcement of existing stereotypes, lack of control and consent, potential for misuse or abuse, and the fallibility or incompleteness of data. These flaws pose a significant threat to data protection and privacy, especially with the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the EU, which requires companies to ensure the protection of personal data and to be transparent about how data is used. It is necessary to closely scrutinize and regulate the use of predictive optimization to avoid negative impacts on individuals and society as a whole.
